Crew Awards and Movie Night

As one of the most sought after titles on the mountain bike calendar, standing on the podium in Lourensford is a great honour. It’s no lesser feeling for the thousand plus riders who get to walk on stage to receive those finishers’ medals that they worked so hard for over eight days, and indeed for the several months prior.

On Wednesday night, it was the crew’s turn – the Absa Cape Epic hosted the Crew Awards & Movie Night at the Labia Theatre in Cape Town. After some drinks, hotdogs, chips & biltong, the highly anticipated behind-the-scenes documentary was screened, followed by the prestigious crew awards ceremony. Here, the outstanding achievements of the hard-working crew were celebrated and the very best of the best were decorated in front of the 150 attendees.

Of course it also affords the crew an opportunity to get to know the people whose names appear on the crew list every year. However many never actually meet at the event. Many have attended several events never knowing who Roy van Schoor is, for example. How would they, when he’s out on the course setting up a comms infrastructure, or holed up in his caravan monitoring race radio? Movie night is where the crew can share some of the great stories of the race.

When the sound system wasn't being attacked by tech gremlins, the 35-minute documentary showed the-making-of action, giving insight into complicated machinery that is the inner workings of the Absa Cape Epic. Featured were some of the key 9-year crewmembers and what they do at the event, showcasing the teamwork and the scale of the operation.

Congratulations go to the night’s winners, the success of the event hinges on this core group of dedicated crew members. To view the album on facebook click here.
