Richard Scott Paints 2015 Stage Locations

2014-11-19

Capetonian Richard Scott is renowned internationally for his bright and striking “neo pop” artworks.  A less well-known fact about him is that he is a passionate mountain biker and will be competing in his third Absa Cape Epic next March.

Now Scott has combined those two passions to produce a series of five paintings based on the 2015 Absa Cape Epic route.  Proceeds from prints of the paintings will be donated to local charities, including the Qhubeka cycling initiative.  “I had talked with (Absa Cape Epic founder) Kevin Vermaak about creating something special for the Cape Epic involving images of bicycles,” he told the media at the official route launch in October.  “I then sat with some of the Epic staff and brainstormed a few ideas.”

They came up with the idea of a painting for each of the stage locations - Cape Town, Elgin, Worcester, Wellington and Meerendal. Scott then produced the five works, which locate riders in bold, bright landscapes inspired by each of the areas.  The five original paintings will probably be kept together as a collection, but 12 prints of each have been made and these will be sold to help Qhubeka and other local charities.

Qhubeka explains its objective as helping “people move forward and progress by giving bicycles in return for work done to improve communities, the environment or academic results.  “Having a bicycle changes lives by increasing the distance people can travel, what they can carry, where they can go and how fast they can get there,” it adds.

Scott says mountain biking has become integrated into his lifestyle.  He had originally taken on the Absa Cape Epic to “tick off a box”, but had subsequently become involved with the Stellenbosch-based song.info charity, which also aims to improve children’s lives through cycling.  This in turn led to him joining Meerendal Wine Estate owner Herman Coertze’s Meerendal Songo team for the 2014 Absa Cape Epic, which he rode with Jurie Matthee.

And on March 15 he’ll be back in the field for the third time - this time as it makes its way across the slopes of Table Mountain in the 2015 Prologue.
