Future Absa Cape Epic riders get on (pump) track

2016-10-18

The Absa Cape Epic is the premier mountain bike stage race in the world, attracts the planet’s elite riders and sends them across hundreds of kilometres of the province’s countryside.

Now, however, the event is taking on something on a much smaller scale … for much smaller people.

On Tuesday, October 18, it launched the Deer Park Epic Pump Track: a short course with bumps and banked corners for local children to have fun and learn some skills.

The pump track has been built next to the Deer Park parking area above Vredehoek. It includes rhythm sections – with man-made humps – and berms on corners.

Absa Cape Epic CEO Lynn Naudé said the building of track enabled the event to give back to the Table Mountain National Park – which has twice hosted the Absa Cape Epic prologue – and the local cycling community.

“It is also an opportunity to educate youngsters on responsible use of the mountain as well as introducing them and their families to Table Mountain,” Naudé said.

“An added benefit is that it is a safe place for youngsters to have fun on their bikes and to learn skills that will serve them well when they move on to other cycling disciplines.”

On Tuesday youngsters from the local community joined the official opening party and enjoyed their first sample of the pump track.

* To get there go up towards the mountain on Upper Buitenkant St, which turns into Highlands Ave. Turn right into Deerpark Drive and go straight up to the top into the Deer Park parking area. The pump track is on the right of the parking area. Bring kids and their bikes for some fun. It’s open all day … and free.
