The Absa Cape Epic kicks off with a time trial prologue
All teams participate in a time trial of 22km starting and finishing on Meerendal Wine Estate, outside of Cape Town. Teams have a pre-allocated time slot for their time trial and teams depart at 25-second intervals from 06:45 - 11:15. UCI Registered men teams start from 11:30, allowing amateur riders and the public watch the podium contenders race each other, for the honour of wearing the leader jerseys at the start of stage 1.
Each team's time in the prologue will add to their overall time and will be used to determine the seeding for the start of the first stage on Monday morning. Sunday night after the prologue is spent in Citrusdal, in the tented race village.
Most of the action is happening on Meerendal Wine Estate. Viewpoints on the route are sign posted and within walking distance from the start/finish line, so put your walking shoes on to cheer teams on as they master fantastic single track, or simply relax on the beautiful lawns in front of the Meerendal Manor House.
An additional spectator point is located on Hoogekraal Farm, just off Vissershoek Road on route between the N7 and Meerendal. Here spectators can view riders descending on sweeping single track. If you come by bike, you can even ride up to the hilltop on an alternative signposted route for the best views.
