Why Riding: In support of a friend, Rich Holland, a former SA triathlete, who was knocked off his bike while training for an Ironman event. Rich was in a coma for a while and now suffers from a condition called locked in syndrome. He is fully aware of what people are saying and around him, however he is unable to talk or move. Rich currently requires 24hr care and receives over 10 various rehab sessions per week. Over the past year and a bit since the accident we have seen small, although consistent improvements in Rich's condition as a result of the intensive rehabilitation he recieves. He is now able to communicate via blinking his eye. He is learning how to swallow again, which means that he has begun eating certain foods via mouth again. He's also learnt how to move his arm and fingers without assistance. We are trying to raise awareness for this fellow sportsman of ours, in the hope that people will donate money to allow his dedicated family, friends and caregivers to continue with his rehabilitation, so he can get back on his back in the near future. Rich recently communicated the following new year's message to his supporters: "I wish you a happy New Year. I am feeling good. My wish for 2014 is walking. Thank you for supporting me." http://backonyourbike.com/ @BackOnYourBike
