Volunteering requires long hours but is rewarded with the opportunity to be part of a great team in which you will make new friends, gain new skills and have the unique experience of world class mountain bike racing. The Volunteer roles are allocated based on where a specific needs exist in the successful delivery of the event.  Volunteer positions are mainly at water points and include:

Water Point Activation Team
Race Nutrition Service Team
Race Timing Team
Pro Tech Support Team

Should you feel you have specific skills or experience in other areas, please send a brief description to volunteers@cape-epic.com and we will see if we can place you should the event have a requirement in that area.

Below you can find a basic schedule of what a day in the life of a Volunteer looks like.This will be managed by the various Water Point Supervisors during the event and they will communicate any changes should they be required. 

Please note that the teams at each water point are:Rotated between water points each day to ensure that each team gets to experience the event from a different perspective and to prevent the same team being out in the field longer than the rest over the course of the event

05:00 Meet at designated WP truck  
05:15 Convoy leaves the race village to depart for Water Points (WP) All WPs depart at the same time.
05:45 WP 1 arrives at WP and starts with set up Set up includes: setting up of different drink and food stations, setting up gazebos and tables, making sure the water point is neat and clean.  Strip stop to be set up at WP 1.
06:00 WP 2 arrives at WP and starts with set up Set up includes: setting up of different drink and food stations, setting up gazebos and tables, making sure the water point is neat and clean. Race Nutrition to be set up at WP 2.
06:15 WP 3 arrives at WP and starts with set up Set up includes: setting up of different drink and food stations, setting up gazebos and tables, making sure the water point is neat and clean.
07:30 - 08:30  All WPs set up complete WP supervisor will send a message on the group when set up is done and VOC will confirm when first riders will be coming through.
08:00 First riders expected WP  1  
11:30 Expected closing time for WP 1 WP can only close when the Hyenas pass (sweeps). Once the Hyenas pass, the team can start with break down, load the truck, count stock, clean up. Team then departs for Race Village or assists at mini WP in case of extreme weather or racing conditions.
09:30 First riders expected WP  2  
14:30 Expected closing time for WP 2 WP can only close when the Hyenas pass (sweeps). Once the Hyenas pass, the team can start with break down, load the truck, count stock, clean up. Team then departs for Race Village.
10:30 First riders expected WP  3  
16:00 Expected closing time for WP 3 WP can only close when the Hyenas pass (sweeps). Once the Hyenas pass, the team can start with break down, load the truck, count stock, clean up. Team then departs for Race Village.
11:00 First riders expected finish line WP  
17:30 Expected closing time for finish line WP WP can only close when the Hyenas pass (sweeps). Once the Hyenas pass, the team can start with break down, load the truck, count stock, clean up. Break down only happens on move days.
12:00 - 18:00 Upon Race Village arrival: Please note: Times vary for the different WPs. WP 1 might get back to the race village earlier but they might need to assist at the mini WP or assist at the other WPs. A team will be on standby in the Race Village to assist with loading trucks and carrying of equipment.
  Step 1 - Send truck to dump rubbish and refill JoJo tank  
  Step 2 -   ± 1 or 2 hours to shower, refresh and relax  
  Step 3 - Stock take of drinks and cups  
  Step 4 - Woolworths collection and packing of truck This sometimes only happens after dinner, depends on the logistics.
18:30 - 19:30 Dinner in the rider dinning marquee  

 

*Please note: You might need to assist at other WPs when you finish early or when team members drop out due to illness or unforseen circumstances.  This is a basic schedule to give you an idea of what your day will look like and is subject to change.
