On Sunday 24 October, the 2021 Absa Cape Epic wrapped up in emphatic style within South Africa’s premier lifestyle estate, Val de Vie. It had been 945 days since the last riders wrote their names into The Book of Legend at the 2019 Absa Cape Epic.

In stark contrast to the 31-month wait that riders had to endure between the 2019 and 2021 Absa Cape Epic, the wait until the 2022 edition is just four months, and counting. The question on the lips of the registered teams is “Where are we racing and what’s in store for us?”

The Absa Cape Epic route has always been shrouded in secrecy up until it is announced to the world at the annual Route Launch event, and on Wednesday 1 December 2021, at 19:00 GMT+2, the answers to these question will be revealed. Upholding tradition, the 2022 Absa Cape Epic will present a brand new route, with new demands, new challenges, and new stories waiting to be written. In 2022, the Absa Cape Epic ventures deep into the territories of Absa Cape Epics of old and explores areas wherein only the surface of what’s possible has been scraped. 

“The planning and preparation of the Absa Cape Epic route is a task that takes up to 18 months to perfect” explained Hendrico Burger, Route Director of the Absa Cape Epic. “This means that the team worked on the 2021 and 2022 routes concurrently, with an eye on what’s required for 2023, too. Every Absa Cape Epic route that we present to teams excites me, but 2022 is something special as we venture back into the early days of the race to showcase regions that haven’t been featured in many years; regions that are rough, rugged, and known for Absa Cape Epic essentials – heat and dust. What I can guarantee is that riders, both local and international, will know that they’re racing the Absa Cape Epic.”
