EPIC CHALLENGE LURES TOP SA SPORTSMEN

Well-known former Springbok rugby player, Robbie Kempson, will participate in this years Absa Cape Epic presented by adidas.

Says Kempson: I was spending some time with Dan Nicholl, Brian McMillan and other friends. One thing led to another and there I was, accepting a bet that I would complete the Absa Cape Epic! Following that, Absa offered me sponsorship and a spot in Team Absa in order to prepare for the Big Tree challenge so how could I ever back down? Ive never participated in a cycling event in my life, so this is going to be a brand new challenge. One of Team Absas trainers, Erica Green worked out a programme for us. He adds with a nervous chuckle: I must admit Im not a fan of the mountains. I definitely prefer the flat long, slow rides.

Kempsons partner is Craig Lorden. Last weekend we participated in Team Absas training camp. I wont lie, it was a real eye-opener with tough terrain and 45 degree weather it was a real test of wills. The training camp as given us a taste of what is to come, but we still have lots more work to do if were going to do this race justice.

When asked what would be the most important ingredient to complete the race successfully, Kempson said that one should start training at least three to four months before the race. But I think mind power is going to play the biggest role in finishing the race. His appeal to other participants: Just dont ride me off the road.

Kempson is sponsored by Absa Corporate and Business Bank, and is one of a group of personalities participating in support of the Big Tree Foundation, the official charity of the Absa Cape Epic and the Cape Odyssey. Says Kempson: The foundation aims to improve the lives of communities along the route. Their programmes are specifically designed to improve conditions in and out of the classroom it includes bicycles as an alternative form of transport, as well as school desks, uniforms and books. I believe this is a great initiative and a way for all of us to give back to the community.

In his spare time, of which there cannot be much, Kempson loves to play a round of golf as well as having long lingering lunches. And his next big challenge? After the Absa Cape Epic, I plan to climb Kilimanjaro!"
