On my first Absa Cape Epic (2013) my packing and planning for each stage was horrendous and I found myself scrounging for gear and general supplies for that day’s stage in the dark every morning. Not something you want to be doing before the start…
I learned very quickly how to be prepared for each stage and the answer is super simple: zipper bags.
I’m sure every rider has multiple sets of kit. In the years following I spent the extra bit of cash and made sure I had a new set of kit for every day’s stage. Sure, bibs can be expensive but good ones can last you a long time. (My Assos and Bontrager bibs will be getting me through my 4th Absa Cape Epic).
So now I wake up every day and know exactly what I need for each stage:
- Top
- Bibs
- Socks
- UV arm sleeves
- Four gels
- Three bars
- Extra nutrition
- Strip of Rennies for cramps
- Two fresh Bottles for every stage. They do get muddy and dusty, if old bottles are not cleaned properly, bacteria can end your race
Packing for every stage will not only help you save space if you’re going the tented option, it just makes getting ready easier. Open the bag and put everything on that is inside it. You have enough going through your head getting through the most insane MTB stage race in the world, why stress about all gear every morning or before bed. It’s good to get into a routine, any extra time you save allows for more time to relax.
Next time I will be showing you some tips what the essential tool kit should be for your EPIC adventure.
