Welcome to the 2017 Ride Review: memories of a special race

What a race the 2017 Absa Cape Epic turned out to be. The excessive heat of the first few days was matched by the intensity of the racing, with so-called cross-country specialists showing the marathoners a thing or two about tactics – and probably forever changing the nature of the racing at the front of the field.

As you all know, Scott-Sram’s Swiss pairing of Nino Schurter – the reigning Olympic and World Champion – and Matthias Stirnemann emerged as the overall winners, both taking home the title for the first time. In the women’s race it was an emotional victory for Sweden’s Jennie Stenerhag a year after she had to pull out of the 2016 race with a heart condition. It was also a welcome return to the top of the podium for her Meerendal CBC teammate and race veteran Esther Süss, who last won the category in 2012.

But of course the Absa Cape Epic is not only about the elites: it is special for every finisher and a great achievement by all.

The 2017 Ride Review is a tribute to all those who overcame some of the toughest conditions imaginable for a mountain bike event – you are all champions.

We hope you enjoy it and the memories it brings back about a special year in the Absa Cape Epic history. Thanks for joining us on the 2017 journey.
