I entered the Absa Cape Epic...
I entered the Cape Epic as i was a coach potato for 10 years, I was a hard drinker and smoker. I use to smoke more then 20 siggarettes per day and when i was drinking it was atleast a bottle of brandy. Then when my son was born I made a decision to chnage my life as i always knew in my heart one day i will get fit again as i was a very fit child always copmeting in long distance events and playing rugby was biggest part of my life. I also did cycle alot but never seriously. So it was a couple of months after my son was born that i decided i needed to get fit again by this time i was 29 and i was weighing a smashing 122kg the heaviest i ever was. I first started to diet well i started to eat more healthy and i totally stopped drinking brandy. After a few weeks i joined the gym and i immediately started to train like a maniac. I went to gym 6 days a week only doing cardio and core. I was on the treadmill / bicycle / rowing and core every day. At this time i was losing almost 1kg every second day. I cant exactly remember how long it took but it was about 4months by then my weigh was 104kg. I entered my first mtb race in June 2010 the Nissan Hazeldean race the half marathon 40km. i thot i was relatively fit so i was going to be fine. To my surprize bike fit and gym fit was two different things. At the end of the day i finished in 02h28 which was not to bad but there was room for alot of improvement on the bike. The biggest challenge was to get on the bike and train as it was much more easier then to just go to the gym. By this time my complete life style has changed. I was focused on being fit and i loved it. At the end of 2010 i did a few mountain bike races which included the Crater Cruise Ultra Marathon and the 94.7. I was really enjoying mountain biking alot and i also managed to get 2 partners in the sport. My Cousin Leonard and my best friend Pieter became my team mates. In 2011 i started also to do tri-athlons and also dual-athlons. Last year in March i saw a race on the tv and it was the Cape Epic i recorded every day and i was feeling the urge in me to enter the epic. I went onto the website and the first thing that bothered me was the entry fee i thought i would never be able to get that amount together in such a small time. During the Epic me and my wife were watching the race every night and i told her this is something that i want to do so badly. When she told me that i could enter i was on the website waiting for the entries to open. I couldnt wait but i knew it was far fetched and the reality of getting in and pay the entry fee was very blurry but i entered anyways.
