Why Riding: In May 2012 my girlfriend, at the age of 32, was diagnosed with Cancer. The thing that happens in other people?s lives, but never to a young energetic couple like ourselves.
Looking back now it all still seems surreal. In the space of a week she moved from abnormalities in a routine check-up, to a diagnosis that would shake the world as we knew it to its very core. What followed is still a bit of a blur, backwards and forwards to specialists, sitting with an Oncologist talking 5 year survival statistics, the probability of chemo and radiation and looking at each other trying to understand how life could change so quickly.
We got lucky. Two operations later and 6 weeks of recovery and she has been cleared.
For us, for now, Chantel has been given a second chance. We were delivered from this at the doorstep, but remain mindful of the many who are not as fortunate ? who have battled and continue to battle this every day.
It?s no fairy tale, it?s not romantic, it?s not a Lance Armstrong story ? just life.
We often think Cancer is a disease of the old and the infirm ? that it?s something that happens to your grandparents. The reality is it can affect anyone and your best chance is education and early detection ? that?s what the guys at the Vrede Foundation continue to work towards.
Hopefully I will be able to assist in some small way to help them get their message out there.
