I grew up in Canada's Rocky Mountains, home of the Rocky Mountain Bike company.
I have been at this a good long while.
2004 – The “Clipless Catastrophe”
Decided to try clipless pedals for the first time. Forgot to unclip at a stop sign. Timber! Witnessed by 10 hikers who gave me a round of applause.
2007 – The “Wrong Turn of Doom”
Followed what I thought was a shortcut in Kananaskis. Ended up in a bush, covered in scratches, face-to-face with a confused moose. No KOMs were achieved that day.
2010 – The “Epic Bonk”
Planned a 50km ride. Brought one granola bar. Last 10km felt like an out-of-body experience. Contemplated life choices.
2013 – The “Overconfident Gap Jump”
Thought I had just enough speed to clear a small gap. I did not. The crash was spectacular. My pride took longer to heal than my bruises.
2015 – The “Mud Bath Extravaganza”
Hit a surprise mud pit at full speed. Bike disappeared under me. Rode the rest of the trail looking like a swamp creature.
2018 – The “GoPro Fail”
Strapped on a GoPro for the first time. Got an amazing 15-minute video of my front tire because I forgot to adjust the angle.
2020 – The “Virtual Racer”
COVID hit. Started riding indoors on Zwift. Learned that virtual mountain biking doesn’t quite compare to the real thing… no crashes, but also no trail beer.
2022 – The “Tree Hugger”
Missed a turn, hugged a tree. The tree did not reciprocate.
2023 – The “Surprise Elk Traffic Jam”
Fast descent, cornered hard, and BAM—elk standing right in the trail. Locked up, skidded, and stared into its unimpressed soul. We both survived, but it was close.
2024 – The “75km Ambition” (In Progress!)
Training for my first 75km ride. Hoping to avoid past mistakes like under-fueling, overconfidence, and unexpected wildlife encounters.
